Airport West

Located about 16.5 kilometres north-west of the Melbourne City Centre, Airport West is one of several suburbs of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria. With an estimated population of over 6,500 residents, this modestly-sized suburb has a total land area of 3.7 square-kilometres. Airport West was so named because of its close proximity to the Essendon Airport, which is approximately less than two kilometres to the east (some six minutes by road)-ironically, the suburb does not have its own airport despite its name. The suburb is essentially fenced-in by three freeways: The Tullamarine Freeway to the east, the Calder Freeway to the south, and the Western Ring Road (otherwise known as the M80 Ring Road) to the north-west.

Formerly under the City of Keilor, Airport West is now part of the local government area of the City of Moonee Valley in the State District of Niddrie (one of several electoral districts) and the Federal Division of Maribyrnong (one of several electoral divisions). Surrounding suburbs include Essendon Fields, Essendon North, Keilor East, Keilor Park, Niddrie, Strathmore Heights, and Tullamarine. Interesting locales to visit include AJ Davis Reserve, Etzel Street Reserve, Hansen Reserve, and Weather Station Park.

Residents of Airport West can take pride in their very own Australian-rules football team, the Airport West Football Club. Formed in 1961, this local group is currently affiliated with the Essendon District Football League and has won several awards since its foundation.
